Darkroom
Darkroom is a photography application developed by Darkroom Software, released
as shareware for the Macintosh operating system on January 28, 1996, and later
as a registered Mac OS X update on September 27, 2004. It was a standard
feature of Apple's imaging applications from version 8.0 to 10.2.x. Darkroom
was the first color photo editor for the Mac OS, and remains the only one to
date. While having no integrated image editor component, Darkroom has several
capabilities and integrated plug-ins that allow it to act as an image editor.
Darkroom was succeeded by Adobe Photoshop Elements.
History
Darkroom 1.0 was released as shareware on January 28, 1996 for the Macintosh
platform. The final release was version 9.2, released on October 18, 1999.
During the early development stage, Darkroom was originally envisioned
as a way to take pictures with a "digital back" like a digital camera.
Thus, the first version of Darkroom was originally only for pictures taken
with a digital camera. The technology to display pictures on the screen
of the computer and to print the pictures through a dedicated printer
wasn't available at the time. Therefore, the only way to view a picture
was to do it on the computer screen. Darkroom 1.0 was called
"PhotoEdit" for this reason.
At the release of version 1.5, Darkroom 1.5, the program was changed
to be designed to be used with any digital camera, and was released on
July 14, 1997. Darkroom 1.5 was also a departure from the previous releases,
being the first one to have a splash screen. The 1.5 version also included
such features as automatic image scaling, batch processing, spot healing,
and the ability to open raw images from the camera.
The version 2.0, published on June 26, 1998, introduced several new features,
including a single-window interface and a preview window. The new version
also introduced the ability to view pictures taken with a computer camera
(now called "Pictures from a digital camera") without the need to use a digital
camera. The Windows version of 2.0 was released on July 16, 1998. Darkroom 2.0
was the first version to allow editing RAW images from a digital camera.
